TEMPERAMENT

The Coton de Tulear is a very sweet natured and loving little long-haired dog who is always there to cheer you up. They are happy when you are happy. In France they are known as the "anti-stress" dog. This breed is very intelligent and therefore easy to train. Their playful characteristic remains with them their entire life. Since they were bred only for companionship they are happiest when they are with their human family. Therefore, they like to travel with you, go to work with you or just stay home as long as someone is there accompanying them. They are excellent with children and adults. They are not meant to be left alone for long periods of time and they are strictly indoor dogs. They are attentive when spoken to and cock their heads when you speak to them as if they are listening to you (which they are).

 

HEALTH

Overall, the Coton de Tulear is a strong and healthy little dog that easily lives more than 15 years. They enjoy exercise like walks and playing in the yard, but adjust to their families activity level.

 

THE COAT

The coat on the Coton is very distinctive. It feels very soft like cotton, hence the name "coton". The coat is also long and dense and should be brushed ideally every other day or every two or three days. They hardly shed and are considered to be hypo-allergenic since they don't produce dander. For many people who suffer from allergies it is a good idea to spend time with this (or any breed) considered hypo-allergenic anyways to determine if you can truly live with one before making the final decision to bring one into your home and make it part of your family. The Coton, even when wet, does not smell since their coat is oil-free.
